Earlier this year, it was reported that Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) would be starting in a new film from director Todd Field (In The Bedroom), Tár, the Oscar-nominated director’s first feature film in over 15 years. Now, thanks to a report for Deadline, we now know more about the film’s plot, as well as who will be starring alongside Blanchett in the project, and the film’s expected release date.

It is now being reported that the film will see Blanchett starring as Lydia Tár, an orchestra conductor who is considered to be one of the greatest at her craft and the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra.

Joining Blanchett in the film are Nina Hoss (A Most Wanted Man), Noémie Merlant (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Julian Glover (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Allan Corduner (Da Vinci's Demons). The cast will also include acting newcomers Sophie Kauer and Sylvia Flote in the cast. Kauer is a British-German cellist who attended the Royal Academy of Music.

Field, in addition to directing, also wrote the film. Field has been nominated for an Oscar three times, twice for adapted screenplay, for his previous films In The Bedroom and Little Children, and the third nomination being for best picture for In The Bedroom. He is also serving as a producer on Tár under his Standard Film Company banner with Alexandra Milchan & Scott Lambert for Emjag Productions.

The film’s score is being composed by Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker, Chernobyl). Guðnadóttir has also recently made history as the first female composer to win an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Original Score.

Filming for Tár is currently underway in Berlin. The film is expected to come to theaters on October 7, 2022.
